Guruwa Puja: The traditional healing and spiritual ritual of the Tharu community

  • Religious Objects
  • Natural materials, ritual objects

Men in traditional white Tharu attire gather around ritual objects placed on the ground. The Guruwa — the community's traditional healer and spiritual guide — leads the ceremony, invoking ancestral spirits and natural forces to restore balance and wellbeing. The scene captures the living spiritual tradition of the Tharu people.

The Guruwa tradition predates recorded Tharu history. As the community's primary healer, the Guruwa occupies a central role in Tharu social and spiritual life — diagnosing illness, mediating between the living and ancestral spirits, and presiding over key community ceremonies. This practice continues in Tharu villages across the western Terai today.
