When a community’s traditions are not recorded, they are at risk of disappearing — not through destruction, but through forgetting. That is why the Tharu Cultural Museum was established on January 27, 2019, in Chakhaura, Dang.
The museum was born from a simple belief: that the Tharu people deserve to see themselves reflected in history. After decades of fighting for political and economic rights, it became clear that cultural preservation was equally urgent. Language, art, ritual, and memory are not separate from freedom — they are part of it.
Today the museum houses over 300 cultural objects — farming and fishing tools, traditional jewelry, musical instruments, warrior weapons, festival costumes, and examples of Tharu wall art. Each object was contributed by community members, elders, and youth clubs who understood that these items are not relics of a dead past but living expressions of a continuing culture.
We offer guided tours, cultural workshops, traditional dance performances, and educational programs for schools and researchers. We are open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM in Chakhaura, Dang.
